Factory GVM
Was Never
Enough.

Add a tray, canopy, toolboxes, drawers, rooftop gear, or hook up a caravan — and you're over GVM before you know it. The F-150's factory rating of 2,471kg GVM simply doesn't cut it for a properly built ute.

We build fully engineered GVM upgrade packages designed to dramatically increase your legal payload — without compromising safety, handling, or compliance. Every upgrade includes complete engineering paperwork for pre-registration federal approval.

⚠ Building your F-150? You're almost certainly going to be overweight
  • Over GVM — every trip is technically illegal
  • Unsafe under braking with a full touring load
  • At risk of insurance void in an accident
  • Non-compliant for ATO tax deduction
  • Factory towing limits become your hard ceiling

FAQ — Ford F-150 GVM Upgrade | America's Garage

GVM Upgrade
Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you upgrade your F-150.

America's Garage takes a deeper approach to GVM upgrades than most programs on the market. We focus heavily on the engineering approvals, supporting data, and certification pathway behind the upgrade — not just the parts fitted to the vehicle. Our goal is to offer a more complete and confidence-inspiring upgrade pathway, backed by stronger supporting information and a clearer compliance position with SSM Federal Engineering.
GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) is the maximum legal weight of your F-150 fully loaded — including the vehicle, passengers, fuel, accessories, tray, canopy, drawers, tow ball download, and everything else on the vehicle.

GCM (Gross Combination Mass) is the maximum legal weight of the vehicle and trailer combined.

In simple terms: GVM is about what your truck can carry on its own wheels, while GCM is about how much total weight the truck and trailer can handle together.
For the Ford F-150, our program is federally approved for pre-registration — meaning the upgrade is applied before the vehicle is first registered in Australia. This is the cleanest and most straightforward compliance pathway, and it often makes the certification process simpler and more cost-effective.

If you already own a registered F-150, talk to our team about what options are available for your specific vehicle and state.
Not automatically. A GVM upgrade increases how much weight the vehicle can legally carry — not necessarily how much it can tow. Towing capacity, tow ball download, axle loads, and GCM all interact with each other.

All F-150 GVM upgrade packages include a 4,500kg pre-registration braked towing capacity (except the 3.85T Stage 1 which starts from a lower base). If towing is a big part of how you use your F-150, make sure to discuss this with our team before choosing a package.
Once a vehicle has been engineered and certified around a specific suspension package, changing springs, shocks, ride height, or other load-support components can affect the validity of that approval.

If you want to make changes after a GVM upgrade, the safest move is to check whether the new parts are covered by the original approval or whether the vehicle will need to be reassessed. Never assume you can swap components without confirming compliance first.
A GVM upgrade can affect warranty, insurance, and servicing depending on the vehicle, the parts used, and whether the upgrade has been correctly approved and certified. The best way to protect yourself is to use a properly supported GVM upgrade program, keep all paperwork, and make sure the vehicle is modified and certified correctly.

A professionally developed and fully documented upgrade gives you a far stronger position than a vehicle fitted with parts and no clear compliance pathway. Our SSM Federal Engineering certification provides the documentation you need for insurance and ATO purposes.
